WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 45 University of Virginia men’s tennis team captured its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season with a 4-3 win over No. 42 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 24) in Winston-Salem, N.C. The win boosts UVa’s overall record to 6-2. The Cavaliers are now 1-1 in the ACC.
Virginia started off strong, clinching the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches. That hot start would eventually make the difference in UVa’s 4-3 victory.
In the singles portion of the match, Wake’s David Loewenthal drew the Demon Deacons even with the Cavaliers by defeating Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Virginia responded with a pair of singles wins. Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) defeated Raul Munoz, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) won in straight sets against David Bere, 6-4, 6-1.
Wake Forest drew even with UVa by winning at No. 5 and No. 6, leaving Virginia’s Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Wake’s Mike Murray to battle it out for the match-deciding point at No. 2 singles. Montgomery lost the first set, 3-6, but responded with a 7-6 win in the second set. Montgomery then overcame a 4-3 deficit in the final set to win, 6-4,and clinch the 4-3 Virginia win.
The Cavaliers return to action tomorrow when they take on North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
