CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team swept a doubleheader from Bowling Green Saturday (March 24) at The Park, winning 12-2 and 5-1, to improve to 4-0 in the Who’s Hoo Tournament. In the first doubleheader of the day, Penn State defeated Liberty 10-0 and 4-0 to improve to 3-1 in the tourney. Bowling Green stands at 1-3 in the tournament, while Liberty is 0-4. The three-day Who’s Hoo Tournament concludes on Sunday with Bowling Green and Liberty squaring off in a doubleheader at 9:00 a.m. Host UVa plays Penn State in a twinbill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Cavaliers improved to 26-8 on the season with their sweep of Bowling Green (8-10). Fourth-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led Virginia with five hits, four RBI and three runs in the two games. Young was four-for-four with two doubles, two RBI and two runs in the first game, then belted a two-run homer in the second contest.
In the first UVa game, first-year Jessica Edwards (Santa Ana, Calif./Orange Lutheran) picked up her sixth win of the season against three losses in a 12-2 victory over the Falcons. Edwards allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out eight but walked 11 batters. Third-year center fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) had two hits and scored two runs in five at-bats, while first-year shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Third-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and second-year left fielder Johanna Kaiser (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) both drove in two runs. Jessie Milosek (2-3) took the loss in the circle for Bowling Green.
In the nightcap, Dennis allowed just one run on five hits while striking out 13 batters in the Cavaliers 5-1 victory over Bowling Green. With the win, Dennis improves to 8-3 on the season, while the Falcon’s Jody Johnson (1-2) took the loss. Virginia scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the second inning with Young accounting for the final two runs with a two-run homer to right field. Second-year catcher Britt Gore (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was two-for-three in the game with a double, a RBI and a run scored.
Nikki Rouhana and Holly Franz both had two hits for the Falcons with Frantz driving in the team’s lone run with a double in the third inning.
In the first doubleheader of the day, Penn State (16-8) posted 10-0 and 4-0 wins over Liberty (9-24). Kelly McCann tossed a four-hit shutout in the first game, while Marisa Hanson limited the Lady Flames to four hits in earning the shutout win in the second contest. Liberty’s Ali Thompson (7-8) took the loss in the first game and Carie VanArtsdalen (2-11) was the losing pitcher in the second contest. The Nittany Lions’ Adrienne Manzo drove in three runs with a pair of hits in the first game, while Karen Gulini was three-for-four. In the second game, Penn State’s Barbie Pierce had three hits in as many at-bats and also drove in a run.
