CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 45 University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost an Atlantic Coast Conference match to #53 North Carolina, 5-2, on Sunday (Mar. 25) in Chapel Hill, N.C. Virginia is now 6-3 overall on the season and 1-2 in the ACC.
UVa and UNC staged a fierce battle for the lone doubles point. Virginia won at No. 1 and North Carolina at No. 3 before the Tar Heels’ Marcio Petrone and Greg Archer narrowly defeated Virginia’s Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), 9-8 (3), at No. 2 doubles.
In the singles portion of the match, UVa’s Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) both won decisively at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Vahaly beat Marcio Petrone, 6-1, 6-1, and Montgomery defeated Nicholas Monroe, 6-2, 6-2. The Cavaliers other four singles players did not fare as well. Virginia lost at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Virginia returns to Charlottesville for four matches next week. The Cavaliers’ first match is against William & Mary on Wednesday (Mar. 28) at Snyder Tennis Center. UVa then hosts ACC rivals Clemson and Georgia Tech on Friday (Mar. 30) and Saturday (Mar. 31), before facing Furman on Sunday (April 1).
