CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the second consecutive game, the University of Virginia baseball team defeated its opponent by recording just three hits. This time, UVa defeated the #3 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as Virginia came away with a 3-1 victory this afternoon at the UVa Baseball Field in front of 401 spectators.
Georgia Tech scored its only run of the game when the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Derik Goffena hit an RBI-single to center field that scored teammate Jason Basil. But Virginia countered the Yellow Jackets fourth inning score with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. After Jon Benick reached first base on an error, Hunter Wyant (1-4, run) hit a double to center field that advanced Benick to third base. Two batters later, UVa’s Mark Rueffert drove in the game-tying run on an RBI, sacrifice fly to center field that scored Benick. In the Cavaliers next at-bat, Robert Word (1-2, two RBI, run) hit his third home run of the season after launching a game-winning, two-run shot to deep center field to give Virginia a 3-1 lead.
That would be all the scoring UVa would need as Brandon Creswell (4-2) held Georgia Tech scoreless for the remainder of the contest by pitching a complete game (9.0 innings) and allowing just one run (unearned) on seven hits with a game-high 11 strikeouts. The Yellow Jackets’ Steve Kelly (4-1) was dealt his first loss of the season after pitching 8.0 innings and surrendering three runs (all unearned) on just three hits to go along with eight strikeouts.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 17-10 overall, 5-5 in the ACC. The loss drops Georgia Tech’s record to 21-7 overall, 4-3 in the conference.
The Cavaliers and Yellow Jackets will return to action on Saturday, March 31st at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played at the UVa Baseball Field.
