Virginia’s David Stone Named To 2002 Verizon Academic All-America District III Baseball Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player David Stone (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America District III Baseball Team by the College Sports Information Directors Association of America (CoSIDA). He joins the team with 10 others players in the district. Stone’s selection marks the second time he has received the honor after also being named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America District III Baseball Team last year. He was also just one of 33 players last season to be named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Baseball Team after being tabbed a third team member. Stone is a Biology major with a 3.908 grade point average at UVa.

Stone, a fourth-year outfielder, has started all 47 games he has appeared in this season in left field. He is second on the team with a .353 batting average after 173 at-bats and has recorded 61 hits (including 11 doubles and two home runs), scored 41 runs and posted 31 RBI. Stone has also recorded a team-high 22 stolen bases this season on 28 attempts. On March 15th, 2002, Stone became Virginia’s all-time leader in bases on balls when he walked in UVa’s 11-10 victory over the then #1 ranked Florida State Seminoles. Less than a month later, he also became Virginia’s all-time leader in stolen bases when he recorded a stolen base against Wake Forest on April 13th, 2002. Stone currently stands fourth all-time in hits in a career at Virginia with 261 and needs only four hits to move into second place all-time at UVa.

For his career, Stone has started all 216 games he has appeared in and has a career batting average of .321. He has posted 261 hits, scored 162 runs, recorded 108 RBI and has stolen 79 bases as a Cavalier. Stone is on pace to graduate from UVa with one of the highest grade point averages ever for a a student-athlete.
