Cavaliers Fall to North Carolina 14-13 in overtime in NCAA Quarters

Virginia took a 13-12 lead in the overtime period but North Carolina scored the final two goals of the game to advance to the NCAA semifinals. Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) led the Cavaliers with four ground balls and three caused turnovers while Amy Appelt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had five goals against Carolina for the second consecutive time in 2002. Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had three draw controls and three caused turnovers to go along with two goals and an assist, while Cary Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) also had two goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls and two draw controls. The teams were tied at the halftime break at 7 and then again at the end of regulation at 12. Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) gave Virginia the lead 13-12 with 55 seconds to play in the first half of overtime but the Heels scored twice in the final 24 seconds for the win.
Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes forcing the Heels to take a timeout. Morgan Thalenberg (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) picked up a Carolina overthrow on the restraining line and raced downfield where she passed the ball to Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) who raced in from the restraining line and scored 1:57 into the game. Courtney Muller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) picked up the ground ball after an errant Carolina shot and in the Virginia offensive end Aumiller was fouled on a drive to the cage and she converted the 8-meter, putting the Cavaliers up 2-0 5:22 into the game. Aumiller won the ensuing draw and got the ball to Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who flipped the ball to Chasney who scored 15 seconds after Aumiller’s goal, giving Virginia a 3-0 lead 5:37 into the game. Carolina then scored two goals in a four minute span to pull within one, but on their next possession Muller and Schummer doubled the ball and forced the turnover and got the ball. Sambus sprinted upfield and passed to Chasney, who dumped the ball in the arc to Aumiller, who scored 11:53 into the game to put Virginia up 4-2. Carolina then went on a 3-0 run in a three-minute span to take their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 13:38 to play in the half.
Andrea Pfeiffer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) made a save on the next Carolina shot and in the transition Chasney raced in from the restraining line and scored wiith 11:08 on the cliock to tie the game at 5-5. UNC took the lead a second time on a Kellie Thompson goal with 5:49 to go in the half, and they gained possession again and took it into their offensive zone. There, Cangemi caused a turnover and took the ball upfield where Appelt spun around in the arc and scored to tie the game again with 3:46 to go in the half. A Carolina goal with 1:50 to go in the half gave the Heels a 7-6 lead and then took possession where theytook a shot with 30 seconds to go. Pfeiffer made the save and got the ball to Lauren Keller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) down low, who passed it to Schummer who was cutting forward. Schummer led Aumiller who took it past the restraining line and fed Appelt on the crease. Appelt scored a behind-the-back goal with 4.3 seconds to play in the half to tie the game, sending the teams to the break at 7-7.
Appelt won the draw to start the second half and took the ball upfield where Cangemi took the ball in from the top to put the Cavaliers up 8-7 57 seconds into the period. Carolina tied the game two minutes later on a quickstick feed and then went up 9-8 a minute later. Carolina won the ensuing draw but Aumiller stripped the ball away after the Heels had advanced it a pass and Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) picked up the loose ball and the Cavaliers took it up to their set attack. There Banks rolled the crease and scored to tie the game with 25:15 to go in the half. A minute later the Heels went up 10-9 as Beth Ames scored on a loose ball pickup in the Heels’ offensive zone.
Appelt then scored three goals in a span of 1:36 to put Virginia up 12-10. UNC was called in the crease on their next possession, giving the ball to the Cavaliers. Pfeiffer got the ball to Muller, who led Keller down the field. Keller drove to the cage and fed Appelt who was alone in the arc and then converted the pass, tying the game with just under 20 minutes to play in regulation. A Carolina free position shot hit the pipe and Schummer corralled the ground ball and took it upfield where she fed Appelt at the 35. Appelt then took the ball through five defenders, spun, and scored to give the Cavaliers a 11-10 lead with 18:52 to play in the half. Virginia gained control off the draw and took it upfield where Appelt gained control of the loose ball and fired a shot that gave Virginia a 12-10 lead with 18:09 to play in regulation.
Carolina’s Thompson then scored seven minutes later to pull within one, and with 2:44 to play in regulation scored again to tie the game. Virginia won the draw and got off a shot that was saved by Hoffman, and the Heels took the ball to their offensive end where they drew an 8-meter with 4 seconds to play. Pfeiffer made the save and sent the game into overtime.
In overtime Carolina won the draw and got off a shot that Pfieffer saved, giving possession to the Cavaliers. In Virginia’s offensive third, Banks fed Cangemi who was alone in the arc. Cangemi’s goal with 55 seconds to play in the half gave the Cavaliers a 13-12 lead, but UNC scored twice in the next 55 seconds to take the lead for good.
Virginia concludes the 2002 campaign with a 15-4 record and a seventh consecutive berth in the NCAA championships. The 13 goals scored in the game by Virginia marks the 19th consecutive game this season that the Cavaliers have scored double digits, a school record. It is also the most goals scored by a team that did not advance in the NCAA tournament.
