The University of Virginia women’s track and field team took third place at the ECAC Championships, contested at Princeton University. The Cavaliers finished just behind Seton Hall and runner-up Georgetown with 59 points. Virginia’s Jane Maxwell won the ECAC 10,000m title to lead the Cavaliers. Maxwell’s time of 35:22.19 outpaced the second place finisher by 15 seconds and is the fastest time for the Cavaliers this season. Teammate Melanie Matthews, who has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the steeplechase and the 5K, took the bronze in the steeplechase with a run of 10:25.86. Virginia’s Naccole Guinn was the runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 12.65m and was 4th in the 100 hurdles with a 14.18. On the men’s side, Shay Clark took 5th in the 100 and 6th in the 200 while teammate Jarrett Hagwood was 3rd in the 110 hurdles.
Kiamesha Otey took runner-up honors in the long jump with a leap of 6.28m. Her teammate Caroline Harvey took eighth in the same event, jumping 5.79m. Eliese Mitchell scored in both the discus and hammer, taking second in the discus and fifth in the hammer. Virginia’s Dawn Cleary also scored for the Cavaliers, taking 8th in the 5K with a time of 16:44.16, the fastest time for Virginia this season and a provisional mark in that event. Teammates Ashley Seaton (17:26.99) and Meg McGarvey (17:35.53) also ran the 5K. Curtrell Frye took sixth in the heptathlon for Virginia, scoring 4567. Kim Turko finished 6th in the high hurdles with a time of 14.35.
On the men’s side, the 4x100m team took home third, to go along with the scores from Clark and Hagwood. Pat Slattery ran 9:15.36 in the steeplechase while Tim Bilmanis threw the discus 48.71m.
