CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player Mark Reynolds (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) was selected as a honorable mention choice on the 2002 Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-American Baseball Team. The team, which features a select group of young collegiate baseball talent across the country, was chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Reynolds, a first-year shortstop for UVa, started all 55 of the 57 games he appeared in and batted .283 while recording 127 assists, 115 total bases, 58 hits, 43 RBI, 41 runs, 15 home runs and 12 doubles. He also posted eight stolen bases on nine attempts to go along with a .904 fielding percentage. With his team-high 15 home runs, Reynolds set the all-time single season home run record for a freshman at Virginia. His home run total also ranks third all-time for most home runs in a single season by any UVa player. Reynolds’ 115 total bases and 43 RBI were the third highest marks on the team, his 41 runs scored and 12 doubles were the fourth highest totals on the squad, and his 58 hits was good for fifth on the team.
The 2002 Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-American Baseball Team was headed by Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s Freshman National Players of the Year in RHP Philip Humber of Rice, 1B Vincent Sinisi of Rice and 1B Darryl Lawhorn of East Carolina. UVa’s Reynolds was the only player from Virginia selected to the team.
