CHARLOTTESVILLE – Despite outshooting their opponents 26-6 on the night, the Virginia women’s soccer team tied Richmond 1-1 Tuesday night at Kl?ckner Stadium. The result moves the Cavaliers’ record to 5-3-2 on the season.

“Tonight a draw was difficult given the game,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “I was proud of our effort. We dominated play at times, especially in overtime, but didn’t capitalize on our chances. I was pleased how we bounced back from a tough loss Saturday and probably deserved better tonight.”

After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers wasted little time getting on the board in the second half. Less than a minute after the break, first year midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) was taken down in the box. Senior Kelly Worden (Spring, Texas) converted the penalty kick to give Virginia the lead. In the 64th minute, the Spiders would answer as Annette Isham scored on a breakaway set up by Jessica Marino. In overtime, the Cavliers outshot the Spiders 9-1, but couldn’t come away with the win.

Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made two saves in goal for Virginia while Megan Cox made 12 for Richmond.
