The University of Virginia used a pair of goals by Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) as well as a pair of assists from Sara York (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and Rosemary Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) to defeat the Radford Highlanders 5-0 tonight in Charlottesville. Keepers Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walshingham Academy) combined for the shutout as White recorded 10 saves, the sixth time this year she has recorded 10 or more saves in a game. Flynn’s two markers were her first two collegiate goals.
The Cavaliers got on the board first after an offensive flurry at the other end in which Radford earned the first two short corners of the game, both of which were turned away by the Cavalier defense. York controlled a pass at the 25 and sent the ball to Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) in the circle. Nicholson shot the ball past the outstretched pads of the Radford keeper eight minutes into the contest, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish. Virginia’s defense held strong and White made eight saves in the period to keep the Highlanders off the scoreboard in the first half, which ended 1-0 in favor of the Hoos.
In the second half Nicholson brought the ball into the circle and drew a corner. On the play the ball got loose and Dana Anderson (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) collected it at the endline and sent it to the top of the circle to La Vigne. La Vigne shot the ball to the cage and on the way Flynn tipped it into the boards for her first career goal, which came five minutes into the second half and gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead. Nine minutes later Walker intercepted a Radford pass and got the ball to Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) to took the ball upfield and sent it to Anderson, who took the ball into the circle and drew a short corner. Off the play the ball came loose to Flynn, who slammed it to the back of the boards for a 3-0 lead with just over 20 minutes to play.
One minute later Anderson started the next goal with a takeaway on the sideline and a pass up to York, who drew a corner in the circle. York inserted the ball to Walker, who flipped it over to La Vigne who buried the ball in the far side boards for Virginia’s fourth goal of the game. The Cavaliers scored again 13 minutes later as Hill shot the ball from the top of the circle and drew a corner as a Radford stick sent the ball up into dangerous space. York inserted the ball to Walker, who stopped it for La Vigne. La Vigne shot the ball into the boards for her second goal of fhe night and the Cavaliers’ fifth goal with just over eight minutes to play.
Carr came in the game with fifteen minutes to play in relief of White, who ended the game with 10 saves. Carr made one save and did not allow any goals.
The Cavaliers continue their homestand with a game against the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 pm at the University Hall Turf Field.
