WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a career and match-high 16 kills by second-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), the Virginia volleyball team suffered its fourth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference loss as it fell to Wake Forest 3-1 (30-22, 24-30, 30-16, 30-25) Friday evening (October 4) at Reynolds Gym. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 6-13 overall and 0-4 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons improve to 7-8 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
Geocaris drilled 16 kills against Wake Forest to surpass her former career-best of 13 kills against Clemson on November 10, 2001. She also tallied six digs and three blocks in the match. First-year setter/outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) recorded a double-double with 36 assists and a team-high 13 digs. She also added two service aces, two kills and a pair of blocks. Third-year libero Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) notched her 17th consecutive double-digit outing in digs with 12. Third-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) also reached double figures in digs with 10 and added six kills, three service aces and two blocks.
Kim Stern led the Demon Deacons with 13 kills and also tallied six blocks. Ashley Fisher recorded 11 kills and 10 digs, while Valerie Rydberg contributed 19 digs, nine kills, and four service aces to Wake Forest’s winning effort. Jessica Hauff led all players with seven blocks, including four solo stuffs, while Ashlee Phillips dished out 21 assists.
The Demon Deacons held advantages in three major statistical categories. Wake held a 51-42 edge in kills as well as a 76-61 advantage in digs. The Demon Deacons also enjoyed a 13-7 lead in blocks, while UVa won the serving battle with a 12-6 edge in aces.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, October 8 when it hosts Maryland in a 7:00 p.m. match at University Hall.
