WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened play at their second event of the year, the Deacon Classic, by having fourth singles player reach Saturday’s semifinals. The three day event continues Saturday at the Leighton Tennis Stadium on the Wake Forest campus.
In the flight A of singles, fourth year Jen Tuchband, the tournament’s No. 2 seed advanced to the semifinals with a straight set win in the first round and a come from behind three set win in the quarterfinals. In flight B of singles, first year Lauren Bruch posted a pair of straight set wins to move into the semis. In flight C, third year Laura James, rallied for a three set win the first round before a straight set win later in the day. First year Kyle Montgomery won her only match of the day in Flight D to advance to the semifinals.
In the B flight of doubles the two Cavalier teams of Lori Stern and Montgomery and Laura and Kristen James both received byes into the second round.
Play at the Deacon Classic resumes tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
