CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The run for two Virginia men’s tennis players came to and end today on the second day of the ITA All-American Championships pre-qualifying. A day after fourth year Michael Duquette and first year Rylan Rizza won first round matches, both were eliminated on Saturday.
Rizza advanced to the third round with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Francisco Diaz of East Tennessee State in the morning, but fell in straight sets to Max Fomine of Mississippi State in the third round. On Friday, Rizza had defeated Jens Pilgram-Larsen of Vanderbilt in three sets.
Duquette advanced to Saturday’s second round with a straight set win over Tennessee Tech’s Razvan Illie on Friday. However, Duquette was defeated by Tigran Martirosyan of Loyola Marymount in the second round.
The event, which is the largest college tournament of the year continues through October 13. Virginia’s Doug Stewart will begin play at the event in the qualifying draw next week.
