CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team rebounded from a tough loss Friday night by producing a strong offensive effort to down intrastate rival James Madison 7-3 on a rainy Tuesday night at Kl?ckner Stadium. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 7-4-2 overall.
The Cavaliers got things rolling early on the offensive end. Jessica Trainor (Sparta, N.J.) struck first as she converted a Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) pass inside the box for a 1-0 Virginia lead in the 10th minute. The Cavaliers would strike again just two minutes later as Jamie Fabrizio (Carmel, Ind.) sent a corner kick into the box which was headed from Hammond to Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich), who headed it into the back of the net. Gusick would find the back of the net two minutes later as Fabrizio took a free kick in the Cavaliers’ own defensive third and sent it to Gusick on stride for a breakaway goal. In the 20th minute Darci Borksi (Philadelphia, Pa.) made the score 4-0 Virginia as she deflected Katie Bunch’s (St. Louis, Mo.) cross into the net. James Madison would respond as Kim Argy scored on a breakaway in the 31st minute to draw the Dukes back to 4-1. However, the Cavaliers answered just before halftime as Alyssa Benitez (Lake Mary, Fla.) one-timed a Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) pass into the net making the halftime score 5-1.
In the second half, James Madison scored the first two goals as Argy and Christy Metzker scored unassisted tallies in the 75th and 77th minutes. Benitez would answer in the 81st minute for UVa on a give and go play in the box with Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill). Noelle Keselica (Gaithersburg, Md.) closed out the scoring with a goal of a set piece delivered into the box by Fabrizio and headed down by Hatch.
“The last few games we have played well and not gotten the decision so it was nice to finish our chances and get a win tonight,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We got some goals early and it settled us down. Once we had the lead, we were able to put the pressure on them.”
Overall, Virginia outshot the Dukes 23-8 in the contest. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) and Erin Lycan (Hixson, Tenn.) each had one save in net for Virginia while Jessica Hussey made six for James Madison.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday night as they visit No. 2 North Carolina. Kickoff at Fetzer Field is set for 5:00 p.m.
