Captains Announced For UVa Men’s Basketball Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Seniors Jason Rogers and Travis Watson, and red-shirt junior Majestic Mapp are the captains of the 2002-03 University of Virginia men’s basketball team.

Rogers, a 6-11 center/forward from Staunton, Va., is a three-year letterman for the Cavaliers. He played in 11 games last season, and averaged 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds a game.

Watson, a 6-8 forward/center from Brookneal, Va., is a three-year starter for UVa. He averaged 14.1 points and 9.7 rebounds a game last season, and earned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors for the second consecutive year. Watson led the ACC in four categories last season, including double-doubles (17), rebounding (9.7 rpg.), offensive rebounds (3.43 pg.) and defensive rebounds (6.29 pg.). He is averaging 12.5 points and 9.0 rebounds a game in 88 games during his Virginia career.

Mapp, a 6-2 guard from Harlem, N.Y., has missed the last two seasons because of an injured right knee. He averaged 5.3 points, 2.2 assists and 18.7 minutes a game as a freshman during the 1999-00 season.

Virginia has exhibition games scheduled at University Hall with Big Apple Basketball (Nov. 10, 3:00 p.m.) and One World All-Stars (Nov. 17, 3:00 p.m.) before opening the 2002-03 regular season with a home game against Long Island University on November 22 (7:30 p.m.).

The Cavaliers play an intrasquad scrimmage at University Hall on Saturday (Oct. 19) beginning at 10:30 a.m. The scrimmage is open to the public with free admission.
