Box Score

Virginia’s Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) threaded a pass upfield to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) and then fired the return pass into the cage to put Virginia up by one in the second half, but Cornell scored the final two goals of the game to defeat Virginia 2-1 today in Ithaca. Cornell scored two minutes after the Cavalier goal to tie the game and then scored the game-winner with 2:23 remaining in the second overtime to grab the win. Virginia’s Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made 16 saves in the 98 minutes of play.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Big Red outshoot the Cavaliers and take more short corners, Virginia got on the board first as Hill tackled the ball away at midfield and made a run before slotting the ball to Slocum, who took the ball to the endline. Slocum passed the ball to the top of the circle and Hill fired it home for the first goal of the game. The Big Red stormed right back and scored two minutes later to even the score.

Virginia missed a penalty stroke after Slocum was taken down at the top of the circle with just over five minutes to play in regulation. Both teams had chances, including two penalty corners each, in the first overtime but neither team was able to find the boards. Virginia had a pair of short corners in the second overtime but was unable to convert either one of them.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday as they host the Tigers of Towson.
