WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Virginia women’s soccer team used two goals from senior Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa.) to upset No. 14 Wake Forest 2-1 Saturday night at Spry Stadium. It was the Cavaliers’ first win over a ranked opponent this season and inproves their record to 9-5-2 on the year and 2-3 in the ACC.

The first half had few scoring chances at either end during the first 25 minutes of play. However Borski took advantage of Virginia’s first shot in the 26th minute as Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) sent a cross that was deflected to Borski who one-timed it into the net. The Demon Deacons would quickly counter and tied the game less than three minutes later as Katie Johnson headed a ball into the net off passes from Joline Charlton and Melanie Schneider. The first half had few opportunities the rest of the way and the teams went to halftime tied at 1-1.

The Cavaliers started attacking strong in the second half and in the 53rd minute Borski scored her second of the night on a through ball from Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill.). The Cavalier defense would stand strong the remainder of the game and held on for the 2-1 win.

“I was pleased of our performance tonight,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “We held in there and got a win against a tough team. Hopefully this means we are peaking at the right time.”

Virginia outshot the Demon Deacons 9-8 in the game. Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) made four saves for Virginia while Erin Regan made five for Wake Forest.

Virginia returns home for their final home regular season game Wednesday night. The Cavaliers host N.C. State at 7:00 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.
