Virginia’s Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made 14 saves in today’s contest against the fourth-ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, but the Cavaliers fell to their ACC opponent 2-0. The Demon Deacons scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:52 in the first half, and that was all the scoring they would need. Virginia’s circle defense did not concede a short corner to Wake in the second half and the Hoos kept the Deacs off the scoreboard for the final 61 minutes of the game.
Wake came out early and had five shots in the opening five minutes of the game, but White turned them all away. The Demon Deacons drew a corner in the seventh minute and Maeke Boreel tipped a Kelly Dostal blast from the top left of the circle into the back of the boards for the early 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes later Heather Aughinbaugh took the ball into the circle and fired off a shot that found the far sideboards, extending the Wake lead to 2-0 nine minutes into the game.
From there the Cavalier defense held strong and kept the Demon Deacons from increasing their lead. White’s 14 saves gives her 159 for the season, which ranks ninth all-time for saves in a single season. She also now ranks eighth all-time in a career with 264 saves.
The game marked the final regular season home game for four Cavalier fourth years. A ceremony honoring Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady), Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan), Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) took place just before the start of the game.
Virginia finishes up the regular season on the road, facing Duke (Nov. 1) and Michigan (Nov. 2) in Durham.
