Virginia’s Caitlin Banks scored the first two goals of the game to stake the Cavaliers to a 2-0 lead, one they would not relinquish, and added three more goals and three assists to help the Hoos hold off the #20 Richmond Spiders 17-10 today at Klockner Stadium. Lauren Aumiller also added five goals to help pace the Cavalier attack, while Tyler Leachman had her second consecutive game with a hat trick while also contributing two assists. Tiffany Schummer led the Cavaliers with three caused turnovers, five ground balls and two draw controls as Virginia defeated their second consecutive ranked team.
After the Spiders won the opening draw, Morgan Thalenberg caused a turnover at midfield and scooped up the ground ball to start the scoring drive. The Virginia offense found Banks, who drove to the cage and scored 2:33 into the game to give UVa a 1-0 lead. On the next possession a Richmond shot caromed off the pipe and Kim Connors picked up the ground ball and found Thalenberg in the midfield. Thalenberg brought the ball into the offensive zone and found Banks on the crease. Banks scored less than a minute after her first goal for a 2-0 Virginia lead. Connors won the ensuing draw and in the Virginia set offense, Leachman was fouled on a drive to the cage. She converted the 8-meter shot, putting UVa up 3-0 4:45 into the game, forcing the Spiders to take a timeout.
Aumiller won the ensuing draw to herself, but the Spiders got possession and Kristen Habicht drove to the cage and scored, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Leachman started the next scoring drive as she caused a turnover and Cary Chasney scooped up the ground ball. Aumiller rolled to the cage and scored, giving Virginia a 4-1 lead halfway through the first stanza. UR’s Polly Purcell cut the deficit back to two as she rolled the crease two minutes after Aumiller’s goal and scored.
Virginia then scored three goals in a span of three minutes, with Aumiller and Chasney both notching a goal and an assist. The Cavalier spurt started as Schummer caused a turnover in the defensive third and Courtney Muller picked up the ground ball. In the offensive zone Chasney fed Aumiller on the crease for Virginia’s fifth goal. Elizabeth Pinney won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers worked the ball in the offense where Aumiller fed Banks as she drove down the left side of the arc, scoring her third goal of the game. Schummer won the next draw and Virginia got the ball to Chasney, who drove down the left side of the arc and scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season, giving Virginia a 7-2 lead. The Cavaliers went up 8-2 as Banks fed Nikki Lieb on a break and Lieb notched her first career goal just before the half.
Virginia’s Meredith Lazarus scooped up the ground ball after Richmond controlled the opening draw of the second half but lost it. Lazarus got the ball to Amy Appelt, who scored 1:55 into the second half as she rolled the crease and fired the ball in the net as she was fouled. Richmond answered right back as Purcell converted an 8-meter shot. In turn, the Cavaliers won the draw as Chasney controlled to herself and worked the ball behind, where Banks fed Thalenberg as she streaked through the arc. Thalenberg’s goal gave Virginia a 10-3 lead, marking the 23rd consecutive game of double-digit scoring for the Hoos.
Andrea Pfeiffer’s save started the next Virginia scoring possession, which was completed as Leachman drew a double team and fed Aumiller in the arc. Aumiller’s goal was her third of the game and marked her second consecutive game with a hat trick.
The two then combined for eight goals in a 10 minute span, starting as Richmond’s Libby Berlacher scored in the 42nd minute. Banks answered 33 seconds later as she won the draw and drove to the cage. Richmond responded with a draw control and long drive, as Katie Dolan scored 15 seconds after Banks. The Spiders controlled the next draw but Pfeiffer made a save and on the breakout, Virginia got the long ball to Ashleigh Haas who ran a 2v1 break with Banks, who scored with just over 16 minutes to play. Haas took the next draw and Julie Hauser controlled it. Hauser got the ball to Leachman, who fed a streaking Aumiller, who scored 19 seconds after Banks. The Spiders then scored three goals in 36 seconds to cut the deficit to 14-8 and forcing the Cavaliers to take a timeout.
Richmond scored again just over a minute later as Caroline McGuire scored her second consecutive goal to pull the Spiders within five with 12 minutes to play, but Aumiller converted an 8-meter shot with 10 minutes to go to notch her fifth goal of the game. Purcell then caused a turnover and scored the five minutes to play to cut the deficit back to five.
Pfeiffer made another save and the Virginia offense found Banks, who fed Leachman for a goal with just over a minute to play. The Spiders controlled the draw but were offsides on the play, giving the Cavaliers the ball just above the restraining line. Thalenberg’s long outlet lead pass to Leachman gave Leachman her second consecutive hat trick and a Cavalier lead of 17-10 with 50 seconds to play.
Virginia opens ACC play on Tuesday, March 11 as the Maryland Terrapins come to town. Game time is 7:00 at Klockner Stadium.
