Box Score

Virginia’s Tiffany Schummer had three caused turnovers and seven ground balls to pace the Cavalier defensive efforts while Amy Appelt had five goals and three assists, which brings her to 100 career points (71g, 29a) in only her 25th game in a Virginia uniform. Lauren Aumiller added four goals and an assist, making this contest the 27th consecutive game in which she has scored, tying the school record. Aumiller’s assist to Morgan Thalenberg also gives her 71 career assists, moving her into sole possession of second-place all-time at Virginia for career assists. The Cavaliers (4-2) had to rally from early deficits of 0-2 and 1-3 to defeat the Nittany Lions (2-2) who sit atop the American Lacrosse Conference.

After Penn State scored the first two goals in the game’s first 2:19, Andrea Pfeiffer made a save and started a transition that was completed as Appelt rolled around the crease and scored to get the Hoos on the board. A Nittany Lion goal four minutes later put the visitors up by two again just over eight minutes into the game.

Pfeiffer scooped up a ground ball on a State overthrow and again the Virginia offense got the ball to Appelt, who scored eight minutes after her first goal to pull the Cavaliers back within one. Kim Connors won the ensuing draw and Virginia got the ball to Thalenberg, who stuffed back the rebound of her first shot to tie the game 12:53 into the contest.

Courtney Young ran out a Penn State overthrow off the draw and gained possession for the Cavaliers at the Virginia defensive restraining line. The Hoos worked the ball into the hands of Aumiller, who ran in from the left side of the cage and scored at the halfway point of the first stanza, forcing State to take a timeout. Aumiller’s goal ties her with Lindsey Sheehan (1985-86), Dawn Wisniewski (1986-87) and Jamie Haas (1999-00), each of whom scored in 27 consecutive games.

Penn State won the next draw but Lauri Kenis intercepted a pass going into the Cavalier defensive third and started a fast break going the other way. Appelt fed a streaking Cary Chasney who scored 27 seconds after Aumiller to give Virginia a 5-3 lead. Pfeiffer made a save on Penn State’s next shot and cleared the ball to Molly Urlock in the midfield. Urlock threw the ball to Connors, who fed a streaking Thalenberg for a goal 84 seconds after Chasney’s.

Schummer won the ensuing draw and in the Cavaliers set attack, Aumiller fed Thalenberg who was cutting through the arc. Thalenberg’s goal not only gave her a hat trick but was also Aumiller’s 71st career assist, inching her just past Anna Yates, who had 70 from 1992-95.

Penn State’s Katie Jeschke, the ALC Player of the Week March 4, scored twice in a span of 45 seconds off an 8-meter and a run to the cage, pulling the Nittany Lions within two at 7-5 with 4:44 to play in the half.

Virginia responded with a goal 1:24 later as Pfeiffer made another save and Young scooped up the ball right outside the goal circle. On the fast break Appelt rolled under in the arc and notched the 13th hat trick of her career, giving Virginia an 8-5 lead. Courtney Muller scooped up a Penn State dropped ball and Virginia transitioned upfield where Chasney converted an 8-meter shot with 27 seconds to play in the half. Chasney then won the draw to herself and got the ball to Aumiller, who rolled in the arc and scored 14 seconds after Chasney, giving the Cavaliers a 10-5 lead that they took into the break.

Penn State won the opening draw of the second half but Schummer picked up a Penn State overthrow and the Cavaliers moved the ball upfield to Appelt, who raced in to the cage and scored. Connors won the draw and got the ball to Appelt, who fed Aumiller on the goal circle. Aumiller scored just 1:25 after Appelt, giving the Hoos a dozen goals. A pair of Nittany Lion goals two minutes apart cut the deficit back to five halfway through the second half.

Muller picked up a missed shot by the Lions and in the transition Caitlin Banks raced in from the top of the fan to score, giving the Cavaliers a 13-7 lead. A Penn State turnover gave the ball back to the Cavaliers. The offense got the ball to Appelt, who raced into the arc and rolled under to score her 5th goal of the game.

Julie Hauser caused a turnover and the Cavaliers gained possession and brought the ball to their offensive third, where Appelt fed Aumiller on the goal circle with 7:26 left to play in the second half, recording her 100th career point in the process.

Virginia’s Ginger Miles entered the game with five minutes to play, replacing Pfeiffer, who finished the game with nine saves. Pfeiffer now has 245 career saves, which places her seventh all-time at Virginia in that career statistic. Miles saved the first two State shots she faced, but a pair of Nittany Lion goals in the final 1:13 made the final score 15-9 in favor of the Cavaliers.

The Hoos return to action on Sunday, March 16 as they face the defending national champion Princeton Tigers at 1:00.
