Andrew Dobies Pitches a Complete Game Shutout to Lift Virginia to a 6-0 Shutout Victory Over William & Mary

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team increased itswinning streak at home to eight game (8-0) after posting a 6-0 shutoutvictory over the visiting William & Mary Tribe in a non-conference game atDavenport Field at the UVa Baseball Field. Virginia’s starting pitcherAndrew Dobies pitched a complete game shutout with a game-high eightstrikeouts while UVa’s Paul Gillispie and Joe Koshansky each went 3-for-4 atthe plate to lead the Cavaliers to their 10th win of the season.

Virginia took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when MarkReynolds walked, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and then scored arun one batter later on a RBI-single through the right side by Koshansky.Reynolds’ run and Koshansky’s hit eventually became game-winners.

The Cavaliers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a4-0 lead when the trio of Koshansky (single), Chris Sweet (single) and KyleWerman (reached on an error) got on base before scoring a run. Scott Headdpicked up a RBI after walking with the bases loaded to drive in Koshanskybefore Paul Gillispie posted a RBI on a ground out to second base that scoredSweet. Matt Street connected on a RBI-single to left field to drive inWerman for Virginia’s third run of the inning.

UVa added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead whenZimmerman scored Reynolds from third base with a RBI ground out to secondbase. Reynolds reached first base on a W&M throwing error. The Cavaliersextended their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Gillispiedrove in Werman from second base with a RBI-single to right field.

UVa starting pitcher Andrew Dobies (4-0) picked up his fourth win of the yearand pitched Virginia’s first complete game shutout of the season after going9.0 innings with his game-high eight strikeouts. Dobies’ complete gameshutout was the Cavaliers’ first since Jeff Kamrath accomplished the featback on April 5, 2002 in College Park against the University of Maryland.

W&M starting pitcher Chris Ray (3-2) took the loss and lasted just 4.0innings after surrendering four runs (all unearned) on seven hits with onestrikeout.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 10-8 overall, while the lossdrops William & Mary’s record to 13-9 on the season.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on March 21-23 when Virginia hoststhe Duke Blue Devils in a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series. UVawill face Duke on Friday, March 21st at 3:00 PM, Saturday, March 22nd at 2:00PM and Sunday, March 23rd at 1:00 PM. All three games will be played atDavenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
