CHARLOTTESVILLE – Student Athlete-of-the-Month showcases athletes who have demonstrated excellence both on the playing field and in the classroom. The March Female Student Athlete-of-the-Month, fourth-year Lauren Aumiller has displayed a strong work ethic in her academic and athletic endeavors. An Economics major from Baltimore, Md., Aumiller discusses her final season and life after college.
Q: Where are you originally from and what brought you to UVa?
A: I was six years old when I first started playing. I decided to play lacrosse because my older sister played and I thought it looked like fun. I was also very interested in just about any sport at that time.
Q: How old were you when you began playing lacrosse and why did you decide to play in the first place?
A: Although I am originally from Baltimore, I grew up going to Virginia games. I always thought that going to school here would be great. As I grew up, I realized that Virginia had everything I was looking for in a college, both in athletics and academics.
Q: What is your favorite lacrosse moment and why?
A: My favorite lacrosse moment (or moments) was when our team went to Orlando for the ACC’s my second year. The team had a great time together and the Disney complex where we played was absolutely unbelievable.
Q: Who or what has influenced your life the most?
A: My sister has influenced me a great deal. She has always been there to support me in everything that I do, and the same is true for the rest of my family.
Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of your lacrosse career?
A: Coming up short in the tournament for the last couple of years. Making it all the way to the national championship is now my greatest challenge, as well as my teams.
Q: How do you balance your classes and coursework with your lacrosse schedule?
A: I try really hard to plan ahead and get all of my work done and turned in on time. If not, the procrastination will be horrible.
Q: What are your plans for after graduation?
A: Immediately after graduation in May, I plan to go to Europe for about three weeks with some of my friends. We will be traveling to Paris, the Italian Riviera, Switzerland, and Prague. I’ll have a little break and will then start work in New York City in July. I will be working for Goldman Sachs & Co. as a financial analyst in their Equities Division.
Q: And, finally, what do you do in your free time?
A: I do various different things when I have free time. Sometimes I play golf and tennis. I also go out with my friends and I love to try new restaurants.
