AUBURN, Ala. – University of Virginia women’s swimmers Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) finished fifth and sixth in the preliminaries of the 500 freestyle Thursday (March 20) at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which are being held at Auburn’s James E. Martin Aquatics Center. Lane and Burke advance to this evening’s championship final with their performances in the 500 free.
Lane, a fourth-year, placed fifth in the prelims of the 500 free with a time of 4:43.85. Burke, a first-year, competing in her first NCAA Championship finished a tenth of a second behind Lane in 4:43.95 to take fifth place. Both swimmers advance to the championship final of the 500 free.
First-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 15th in the prelims of the 500 free with a time of 4:46.98 and advanced to the consolation final. Fourth-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) tied for 15th in the preliminaries of the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.67 and advanced to the consolation final. The third Cavalier to advance to the consolation finals is second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep). Georoff clocked a time of 22.91 to place 14th in the 50 free.
Virginia also had four swimmers compete in the 500 free who did not advance to the evening session. Third-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) was 27th in the 500 free (4:49.23), while second-year Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) was 34th (4:50.78). Second-year Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) placed 36th (4:51.24) and third-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 51st (4:55.10).
The Cavaliers also finished 19th in the prelims of the 400 medley relay. UVa’s foursome of first-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), Bosevska, third-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Georoff combined to clock a time of 3:44.98.
The first of three final sessions for the 2003 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. Central Time. Friday’s preliminary events begin at 11:00 a.m. Central Time.
