AUBURN, Ala. – University of Virginia women’s swimmers Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) captured first team All-America honors Thursday (March 20) at the 2003 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Auburn’s James E. Martin Aquatics Center. Lane was sixth in the 500 free, while Burke placed seventh in the same event. UVa fourth-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep), second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep), and first-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) each earned honorable mention All-America accolades.
After six of 21 events, Virginia has scored 37 points and stands in 10th place. Defending champion Auburn leads the 2003 NCAA Championships with 168.50 points, while Georgia is second with 123 points.
Lane, a fourth-year, earned first-team All-America honors for the fourth consecutive year in the 500 free. She placed sixth this evening with a time of 4:44.08. Competing in her first NCAA Championship final, Burke finished seventh in the 500 free with a time of 4:45.49 to earn her first All-America certificate. It is only the third time in school history Virginia has had two women’s swimmers earn first-team All-America honors in the same event.
In the consolation finals of the 500 free, Gordon clocked a time of 4:49.33 to finish 15th and earn the first honorable mention All-America certificate of her collegiate career.
In the 200 individual medley, Bosevska placed 10th with a time of 1:59.74 to become an honorable mention All-American.
Georoff became the fifth Cavalier to capture All-America honors at the 2003 NCAA Championships with her 14th place finish in the 50 freestyle. Georoff touched in a time of 23.11 in earning honorable mention All-America honors.
Several other Cavaliers competed in the preliminaries Thursday. Third-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) was 27th in the 500 free (4:49.23), while second-year Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) was 34th (4:50.78). Second-year Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) placed 36th in the 500 free (4:51.24) and third-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 51st (4:55.10). UVa also finished 19th in the prelims of the 400 medley relay. Virginia’s foursome of first-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), Bosevska, third-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and Georoff combined to clock a time of 3:44.98.
The 2003 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continue Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. Central Time with day two preliminaries. Friday night’s finals begin at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
