AUBURN, Ala. – University of Virginia fourth-year All-American Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) finished seventh in the finals of the 400 individual medley Friday (March 21) at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which are being held at Auburn’s James E. Martin Aquatics Center. With her performance, Bosevska earned first-team All-America honors in the 400 I.M. for the fourth consecutive year.
After 14 of 21 events, Virginia has scored 78 points and remains in 10th place. Defending champion Auburn has taken a commanding lead in the 2003 NCAA Championships with 389 points, while Georgia is second with 262 points.
Bosevska earned her fourth first-team All-America certificate in the 400 individual medley with her seventh place time of 4:13.37. She is just the second Cavalier to capture first-team All-America honors in the same event four consecutive years.
The Cavaliers had a pair of swimmers earn honorable mention All-America accolades in the 400 I.M. as fourth-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and third-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) finished 10th and 12th, respectively. Lane was 10th with a personal best time of 4:14.71. Baly was 12th in a time of 4:15.13 after finishing 15th in the prelims.
First-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) was the fourth Cavalier to earn individual All-American honors during the second night of competition at the NCAAs as she finished 12th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.66 seconds. White was an honorable mention All-American with her 12th-place finish.
The Cavaliers also competed in the 800 freestyle relay and finished 11th with a time of 7:16.40. Lane, first-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel), Bosevska and third-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) each swam legs on the 800 free relay that earned honorable mention All-America accolades.
Several other Cavaliers competed in the preliminaries Friday. First-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 20th in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:18.17, while second-year Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) placed 26th (4:20.20) in the same event. In the 100 butterfly, third-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) was 32nd with a time of 54.97 and second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) posted a time of 57.00 to finish 51st. Dykehouse and Burke swam the 200 freestyle. Dykehouse was 24th (1:48.86) and Burke tied for 41st (1:49.98).
The third and final day of competition of the 2003 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships gets under way Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Central Time with preliminaries. Saturday’s finals begin at 7:00 p.m. CT.
