Virginia’s Lane, Burke And Bosevska Earn First Team All-America Honors In 1650 Freestyle At Women’s NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Virginia had three swimmers captured first-team All-America honors in the 1650 freestyle Saturday (March 22) at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which were held at Auburn’s James E. Martin Aquatics Center. Fourth-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) earned runner-up honors in the 1650 free, while first-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) and fourth-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, to garner first-team All-America honors. As a team, the Cavaliers finished 13th, which marks the fifth consecutive year UVa has placed in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships.

Virginia scored 118 points to finish in 13th place at the 2003 NCAA Championships. Auburn defended its NCAA title, scoring 536 points to win the 2003 NCAA Championship. Georgia finished second with 373 points, followed by Southern Cal (284), Southern Methodist (281) and Florida (277).

Lane, the NCAA champion in the mile in 2000 and 2001, clocked a school record time of 15:53.49 to place second to Southern Methodist’s Flavia Rigamonti in the 1650 freestyle. Lane, who broke her own school and ACC records by four tenths of a second in her final collegiate swim, earned first-team All-America honors in the mile for the fourth consecutive year. She was also a four-time first team All-American in the 500 free. Burke and Bosevska join Lane as first-team All-Americans in the 1650 free. Virginia was the only school to have three first-team All-Americans in the mile. Burke was seventh in the 1650 free with a personal-best time of 16:09.31, while Bosevska was eighth in a time of 16:13.05, which was also a personal best.

Several other Cavaliers competed in the preliminaries Saturday. Virginia had three swimmers in the 200 backstroke. First-year Corey Berg (Hyde Park, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) was 23rd with a time of 1:59.15 which equaled her career-best. First-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 32nd in the 200 back with a personal best time of 2:00.28, while first-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) also had a career-best with a time of 2:00.86 to place 36th. Second-year Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) was 28th in the 100 free with a time of 50.22. Third-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) finished 40th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.92. The Cavalier foursome of third-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep), Georoff, Gordon and second-year Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) clocked a time of 3:29.81 to place 22nd in the 400 free relay.
