RALEIGH, NC – The No. 38 Virginia men’s tennis team defeated NC State 7-0 on Sunday. The win improves the Cavaliers to 16-2 on the season, and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Virginia opened the match by sweeping the doubles matches. No. 33 ranked Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) won at No. 1 doubles, while Chris Gonyer (Louisville, Ky.) and Stephen Nolen (Aurora, Colo.) won at No. 2 and Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) won at No. 3.
In singles, the Cavaliers swept all six matches to secure the 7-0 win. Stewart, Rizza, Gonyer, Nolen, Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) and Meythaler all won for UVa.
“Today was a good performance for our team,” stated Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “After a big win yesterday, we came out today focused and played well. To be 3-0 in the ACC is a great tribute to the effort of this team.”
Virginia continues their road trip next weekend in Tallahassee to play Florida State, Jacksonville, and Stetson.
