At the other end, Virginia’s third captain, Lauren Aumiller, drew a shooting space foul with just under 11 minutes to play in the first half and converted the 8-meter shot to become Virginia’s all-time leading scorer with 252 points (178g, 74a). Nine minutes into the second half, Cary Chasney caused a turnover and threw the ball to Aumiller at the restraining line. Aumiller finished the game with four goals and two assists, giving her 181 goals and 75 assists for 256 career points.

UMBC got on the board first 2:16 into the game, but Kim Connors won the ensuing draw and Virginia brought the ball behind the cage to Aumiller, who fed Chasney, who was cutting down the arc. Chasney’s goal, which came 48 seconds after UMBC’s, tied the game at 1. Virginia took the lead off the next draw as Aumiller won the draw to herself and took the ball into the UVa offensive end, where Amy Appelt rolled under her defender and scored 43 seconds after Chasney, putting Virginia up 2-1. UMBC tied the game 32 seconds later as the Retrievers broke the Cavalier clear and scored on a breakaway.

The Cavaliers won the opening draw of the second half but UMBC gained possession and took it downfield where they lost possession and Connors flipped the ball to Thalenberg at the restraining line. Thalenberg tossed the ball to Kenis, who threw a long pass to Courtney Young, who fed Aumiller. Aumiller raced in for the goal, opening the scoring in the second half. The Retrievers answered three minutes later on an unassisted goal by Jennifer Kasper. UMBC won the ensuing draw but Lieb caused a turnover and picked up the loose ball, starting a fast break that saw her get the ball back at the offensive restraining line where she fed Thalenberg cutting to the cage.

Again the Retrievers won the draw but Chasney caused a turnover and brought the ball into the offensive zone. There she fed Aumiller, who raced in from the top to notch a goal nine minutes into the second half, giving her a hat trick, the 35th of her career, setting a new school record.

Kenis caused a turnover and was awarded the ground ball, starting the next scoring sequence that was completed as Young drove to the cage, scoring Virginia’s 16th goal with 16:18 to play in the game. UMBC again won the draw but an overthrow by the Retrievers was scooped up by Andrea Pfeiffer at the goal line. She started the transition that found Ashleigh Haas on the wing. Haas fed Aumiller, who scored on an over-the-shoulder shot, putting the Cavaliers up 17-6.

UMBC scored three goals in a two-minute span for a mini-run, but the Cavaliers answered back with a pair of goals 12 seconds apart. Ginger Miles, who had come in for Pfieffer with seven-and-a-half minutes to play, started the first goal with a ground ball pickup after UMBC lost the ball behind the cage. At the other end of the field Hotarek threw a long pass to Kate Jerde who was in the arc. Jerde’s goal was the first of her career at Virginia. Hotarek won the next draw and took it upfield where she fed Metz, who scored the Cavaliers’ 19th goal of the game at the 58:29 mark of the contest.
