CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The ninth-ranked Virginia men’s swimming and diving team is sending nine swimmers to compete in the 2003 Men’s NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. The meet will be held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas, Thursday March 27 through Saturday, March 29. The Cavalier men are looking to improve upon their 11th-place performance in 2002, the best finish in school history.
Virginia, the 2003 ACC champions, has entrants in 11 of the 13 individual swimming events (every event except the 100 and 200 breaststroke) and is also competing in all five relays. The Cavaliers have multiple entrants in seven events. UVa has three entrants in each of the freestyle events and two in the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley. Listed below is an entire breakdown of Virginia’s event entrants.
Third-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) – 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free
First-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) – 1650 Free, 500 Free, 400 I.M.
Fourth-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) – 1650 Free, 500 Free
Second-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) – 400 I.M., 200 I.M., 200 Fly
Third-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) – 50 Free, 100 Free
Third-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) – 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free
Third-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) – 500 Free, 1650 Free, 200 Free
Second-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) – 200 Fly, 100 Fly
Third-year Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) – 200 Back, 100 Back
Four Virginia swimmers are seeded in the top 10 in a total of five events. Crippen is seeded fifth in the 1650 free (14:51.87) and sixth in the 500 free (4:18.20). Raab earned a five seed in the 200 butterfly for his time of 1:44.28. Prichard’s time of 4:18.56 makes him the eighth seed in the 500 free. Greenwood is ranked 10th in the 400 I.M. (3:47.56). Virginia also has two ranked relays entered in the meet; the 400 and 800 free relays are 11th and 13th, respectively.
Anderson, Kerpelman, Prichard, and Wagner each earned first-team All-America accolades at the 2002 NCAA Championships. DeMarco, Greenwood, Haag, and Raab were honorable mention All-Americans. Anderson’s sixth-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyles earned him first-team honors in both events. Prichard was a first-team All-American with a sixth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle and an honorable mention All-American in the 500 free (ninth). Kerpelman and Wagner joined Anderson and Prichard in earning first-team honors, as all four were members of UVa’s eighth-place 800 free relay. Wagner also earned honorable mention honors with a 10th-place performance in the 200 back, and Kerpelman garnered honorable mention certificates for his swims in the 200 and 400 free relays (11th in both). Raab was an honorable mention All-American with his 15th-place finish in the 200 fly and as a member of UVa’s ninth place 400 medley relay. Greenwood earned honorable mention honors with a 10th-place finish in the 400 I.M. and DeMarco was an honorable mention All-American in the 1650 free (14th). Haag was an honorable mention All-American as a member of Virginia’s 200 and 400 free relays which both finished 11th.
