CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia seniors Matt Schaub and Almondo “Muffin” Curry have been elected by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2003 football season, head coach Al Groh announced on Friday prior to the squad’s first spring practice.

The Cavaliers also selected seniors Kevin Bailey and Jamaine Winborne as alternate captains.

Schaub, a 6-5 quarterback from West Chester, Pa., was the 2002 ACC Player of the Year, a first-team All-ACC honoree, and honorable mention All-American by CNNSI.com. The nation’s top returning quarterback and 2003 Heisman Trophy candidate led the ACC in passing efficiency, touchdown passes (28), completion percentage (68.9), and completions (288). Last season, Schaub set or tied 10 UVa single-season records. He led the Cavaliers to four come-from-behind second half wins and a second-place finish in the ACC standings en route to a 48-22 win over West Virginia in the Continental Tire Bowl.

Curry, a 5-8 cornerback from Hampton, Va., was an honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2002. For the second straight year, he led the ACC defensive backs with three sacks, tying the Virginia record for the most sacks by a cornerback.

Bailey, a 6-6 center from Lexington, Ky., will return to action this spring after injuring his knee in the second game last fall. The starter was a Rimington Award candidate who is expected to headline the offensive line.

Winborne, a 5-10 cornerback from Chesapeake, Va., was the only defensive back to start all 14 games last fall. The 2002 Speed Elliott Award recipient as UVa’s Most Improved Player, Winborne earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week accolades following his six tackles, two pass break-ups, and fumble recovery in the upset win over N.C. State.

The Cavaliers’ next spring practice that is open to the public is slated for Saturday, March 29 at 10:45 a.m. Virginia’s annual spring game is set for Saturday, April 19 at 12:30 p.m. at Scott Stadium.
