CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 22 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to No. 21 ranked Georgia Tech Friday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 11-5 on the season, and 1-1 in the ACC.
Virginia fell behind early as the Yellow Jackets won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to capture the doubles point. The Virginia team of Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) won at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, after Georgia Tech had taken a 2-0 lead in the match, the Cavaliers got a win from James at No. 4 singles to bring the score to 2-1. However, Georgia Tech would record wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to clinch the match before Dora and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles for Virginia.
“Today was a close match between two strong teams that could have gone either way,” stated Virginia assistant coach Constantine Ananiadis. “Give Georgia Tech credit, they were the better team today and deserved the win. We need to put this behind us and start focusing on another tough match on Sunday against Clemson.”
Virginia continues take on No. 25 Clemson Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. If weather is inclement, the match will be moved to the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
