REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won two of three races against Stanford University on Saturday (March 29) under sunny skies at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic. Virginia won the second varsity eight and the varsity four races, while Stanford won the varsity eight race.

The Cavaliers rowed straight away from Stanford in the second varsity eight and won the race with a time of 6:41.1. Stanford finished with a time of 6:53.8. Virginia’s second varsity eight crew was comprised of Crystal MacLeod, Margaret Matia, Kelley Jesnig, Mary Dobmeier, Katie Yrazabal, Claudia Durkin, Amanda Kennedy, Catelyn Coyle and coxswain Danielle Sewell.

In the varsity four race, UVa fell behind at the start and then used a long, low stroke rate to power away in the first 500 meters and win the competition by a comfortable margin. The Cavaliers finished with a time of 7:33.8 and Stanford had a time of 7:52.1. Virginia’s varsity four crew was made up of Jessie Haury, Andrea Czarkowski, Julie Creighton, Kelley Dougherty and coxswain Launa Forehand.

Stanford won the varsity eight competition with a time of 6:23.8 and Virginia finished with a time of 6:31.2. UVa’s varsity eight crew was comprised of Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer, Beth Clark, Lindsay Shoop, Molly Baker, Julie McQueen, Jen Reck, Tammy Clark, Carolyn McMillan and coxswain Betty Shumaker.

The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic continues through Sunday.

UVa crews also won four races at Georgetown on Saturday.

Virginia’s “B” crew won the novice four competition followed by Virginia ‘A”, Georgetown “A” and Georgetown ‘B”. UVa’s novice four “B” crew was made up of coxswain Christina Saunders, Holly Gurgle, Heather Swindell, Martha Adams and Kelly Sparks. The Cavaliers’ “A” crew was comprised of coxswain Ashley Zapf, Jodi Neuhauser, Carla Swartley, Katie McDade and Amanda Tuck.

Virginia won the novice eight race followed by North Carolina, Georgetown and Delaware. UVa’s novice eight crew was made up of coxswain Kristina Caudle, Kim Maxfield, Christina Berry, Katie Verhey, Lauren Cruickshank, Alissa Rubin, Carrie Hatter, Catherine Thrasher and Lexie Zaborowski.

The Cavaliers won the second novice eight with Georgetown second and Delaware third. Virginia’s second novice eight crew was comprised of coxswain Janice Verbosky, Anna Capetanakis, Christina Offutt, Monica Martinez, Lauren Frick, Emily Domenech, Mary Copland, Emily Todd and Bridget Barry.

UVa also won the varsity four competition. The Cavaliers’ crew was made up of coxswain Karen Richardson, Jen Furstenau, Callie Spencer, Dawn Placek and Abby Lynch.
