Virginia Softball Wins Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team won the Tar Heel Invitational with a 2-0 record after rain washed out Sunday’s (March 30) second day of competition. The Cavaliers posted victories over Hawaii and East Carolina Saturday (March 29) at the UNC Softball Complex to earn the tournament title. UVa stands at 23-16 on the season.

Virginia defeated Hawaii 8-7 in eight innings and East Carolina 5-1 for its two victories in the tournament. The Cavaliers were scheduled to play North Carolina Sunday at noon and the championship and consolation games were to take place at 2:00 p.m.

First-year Sara Larquier (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. She hit .600 (3-5), including a double and a home run, four runs scored and three RBI. The home run was Larquier’s team-leading ninth of the season. Third-years Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) and Hannah Owings (Issaquah, Wash./Liberty) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Field was 3-6 with three runs scored, while Owings was 4-7 with three RBI.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday (April 2) when they host East Carolina in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at The Park.
