Former Virginia golfer Cameron Yancey became the first Cavalier to earn fully-exempt status on the PGA Tour by surviving the Tour’s grueling “Q-School” last December. Over the last three months, the Blackstone, Virginia native has been learning about playing golf at the highest level inside the ropes of some of the nation’s most challenging courses.

Yancey has played in three tournaments to this point on the PGA Tour. He made his debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, but failed to make the cut after firing rounds of 75,74,75 on the difficult layouts of Poppy Hills, Pebble Beach, and Spyglass Hill. Yancey also played the following week at the Buick Invitational at famed Torrey Pines outside of San Diego. Yancey recorded rounds of 77,75 to once again miss the cut.

The former Virginia star earned his first PGA Tour paycheck at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson. Yancey fired rounds of 73,71, 72, 71 for a one-under par total to finish tied for 68th. He earned $6,030 for his efforts.

“My favorite part about getting to play on the PGA Tour is definitely playing with the top players in the world on the most perfect courses,” Yancey said. “However, not everyone understands how taxing playing on the tour can be on a person, especially a younger player. There is a lot to learn in the learning process, not only wanting to play your best golf so that you make cuts and get paid, but also the traveling, arranging your plans, and staying organized are all challenges.”

Yancey is currently spending time at home “hunting, fishing and spending time with my family,” before a busy spring and summer schedule on tour. Yancey will play in the BellSouth Classic outside Atlanta, April 3-6, before taking the week of The Masters off. He plans to play in more tournaments after the season’s first major and his schedule really picks up following the U.S Open. Yancey is guaranteed to play in at least 20 more events. His closest stop on tour to Virginia would be June 5-8 at the Kemper Open in Potomac, Maryland.
