The No. 30 Virginia men’s tennis team reached the 20 win plateau for the fifth time in school history, the first since 1984, by sweeping Maryland and Howard Wednesday each by a 7-0 score. The Cavaliers are now 20-3 on the season, 4-1 in the ACC.
Leading the charge for Virginia on the day were first years Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio), and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) who all scored striaght set singles wins in both matches. Ryaln Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), Chris Gonyer (Louisville, Ky.), Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.), Travis Triplett (Louisville, Ky.), Dillon Walker (Dallas, Texas), and Mike Downing (Virginia Beach, Va.) also earned singles wins for Virginia.
“Today was a great chance for us to keep our momentum going,” stated Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We focused well today and I think we are improving with every match we play.”
The Cavaliers return to action this weekend as they travel to Duke and North Carolina.
