The Virginia Cavaliers will compete at the Duke Invitational in Durham, NC this weekend (April 4-5, 2003). The meet features over 35 colleges, including three Virginia schools.
Virginia’s women all-around performance is noted in the fact that the sprint, diatance, field, and relays teams all hold top rankings in the ACC. Fourth year Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, Va.) and graduate student Carielle Doe (Reston, Va.) lead the sprint team with top ACC times. Currently, Otey has the top 100m rank in the ACC . At last year’s meet, Otey won the long jump and also set the season-best in the 200m with a time of 25.17. This year, Doe leads the women’s team in the 200m with a time of 24.48.
The distance team has had a solid start for the outdoor season with leading times in the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase. Fourth year Sharon O’Connor (Lorton, Va.) leads the ACC in the 1500m with a time of 4:26.60 while Dawn Cleary, the Virginia record holder in the event, ranks among the conference’s top times.
The women’s relay team ranks third in the ACC for the 4x100m run.
The men’s sprint, distance, relay, and field teams also hold top spots in the ACC rankings. Fourth-year McGavock Dunbar (Birmingham, Al.) has placed first in the 800m for both the 49er Invitational and the Raleigh Relays.
Fourth-year Matt Ruhl leads the men’s distance team (Somerdale, NJ) and has hopes of top rankings after this weekend’s meet. Ruhl’s season best time of 9:18.82 in the 3000m steeplechase scored him first place for the event at the 49er Invitational and placed him second overall in the ACC.
The men’s relay team is ranked in the top five for the 4×100 and 4×400 meter runs.
