Virginia’s Vika Osipenko broke her own school record in the pole vault by over eight inches while both the women’s 4×100 and 4×400 teams were victorious at the Duke Invitational in action this weekend in North Carolina. Eliese Mitchell, Scott Kimball and Brian Kollar also stood atop the winners’ stand as Mitchell took the title in the discus, Kimball won the 100-meter dash, and Kollar won the javelin event. Mitchell medalled in all three events in which she competed this weekend, taking second in the hammer and third in the shot put. Kiamesha Otey also medalled twice, taking runner-up honors in the long jump with a leap of 6.08m and finishing third in the 100 with a time of 11.75, qualifying for NCAA regional competition in both events.
Osipenko’s vault earned her runner-up honors as she broke the record she set in 2000 by 14 centimeters. It also qualified her for NCAA regional competition.
Kimball PRed in both the 100 and the 200 races, finishing in a 10.62 to take the gold in the 100 while racing 21.46, again a personal best, in the 200 with an 8th place finish. Kollar’s javelin throw of 63.72m (209′ 1″) was 26 feet better than the second-place finisher. Mike Riso also finished in top-six for the Cavaliers, taking fourth in the high jump with a leap of 2.20m (6′ 7.5″).
Carielle Doe and Natalie Randolph also set personal bests in today’s competition. Doe raced 54.07 in the 400 while Randolph ran 60.15 in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Doe finished fifth in the race while Randolph took fourth overall. Both times qualified them for NCAA regional competition.
Mitchell’s discus throw of 49.19m and her hammer throw of 53. 27 were both season bests and qualified her for NCAA regional competition in both events. She is now qualified in three of the weight events.
First-year Rachel Marks finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m, tying her personal best and qualifying her for NCAA regionals. Annie Bobiak also finished third, taking the bronze in the javelin with a season-best 42.41 and qualifying her for post-season competition.
