INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia volunteer assistant coach Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) broke his own American record in the 100-meter breaststroke Friday evening (April 4) while competing in the in the 2003 ConocoPhillips Spring National Swimming Championships which are being held at Indiana University Natatorium. Moses clocked a time of 1:00.21 in setting the American record.
Moses touched in 1:00.21 to better his former American record by eight hundredths of a second. He won the 100 breast by 1.61 seconds in capturing his 10th national title. Moses’ time of 1:01.05 in the prelims was fast enough to win in the finals as well. Moses also won the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:11.22 earlier in the Spring Nationals.
First-year Virginia swimmer Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) placed fifth in the finals 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:53.27. He was also fifth in the prelims in 3:53.90. Crippen will also swim the 1500-meter freestyle Saturday evening.
Moses and UVa second-year swimmer Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) will both represent the United States in the Duel in the Pool which pits the USA vs. Australia. The meet will take place Sunday, April 6 at Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. Raab earned a spot on Team USA’s roster by finishing second in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:58.56 Wednesday (April 2) in the ConocoPhillips Spring Nationals.
