Meredith Lazarus scooped up a game-high eight ground balls and Lauren Aumiller became Virginia’s all-time leader in goals, but it was not enough as the Cavaliers (9-3) fell to the #3 Duke Blue Devils 12-7 today in Charlottesville. With just over a minute to play in the game, Aumiller drove behind the goal and came up on the right side of the cage. As she made a move to the cage, Duke sent the double and Aumiller hesitated and then drove through the double and deposited the ball in the lower right of the goal, scoring her 190th career goal and establishing a new career record for goals scored. On the other side of the field, Duke’s Lauren Gallagher had five goals and Kate Kaiser had four to lead the Blue Devils (10-2) offensively, and Meghan Huether had 15 saves to bolster the Blue Devils from the cage.
The Blue Devils won the opening draw and got the ball to Kaiser, who challenged from the top of the fan and drove in for the opening goal 36 seconds into the game. Virginia answered right away as Tiffany Schummer won the next draw and on the reset, fed the ball to Cary Chasney, who raced in for the score 22 seconds later, tying the game at 1-1 58 seconds into the contest. Duke then scored the next seven goals, starting with a pair from Kaiser who came in from the top and scored twice in a span of 89 seconds to move out to a 3-1 lead. Lauren Gallagher then hit a pair of 8-meter goals in a span of 76 seconds, and Jessica Bennett added a goal before Kaiser’s fourth of the game, to help Duke take an 8-1 lead 23 minutes into the game. In that run, both Katie Chrest and Kate Kaiser were assessed red cards, sending them out of the contest.
Virginia stopped the Duke run as Aumiller drew to herself and the offense got the ball to Chasney, who raced in from the goal line and scored, making the score 8-2 at the break.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the second half, but a pair of Cavalier goals in a minute pulled the Hoos within five at 9-4. Amy Appelt caused a turnover in the Duke defensive zone and tossed the ball to Caitlin Banks. Banks fed Morgan Thalenberg as she cut to the cage, and Thalenberg’s goal was Virginia’s third of the game. Lazarus won the draw for the Cavaliers and Virginia got the ball to Appelt, who drove in and cut across the arc, scoring in her 31st consecutive game. Duke scored six minutes later to move the margin back to six with 18:25 to play in the game.
Nikki Lieb started the next scoring play for Virginia as she scooped up a Duke overthrow on a broken clear and Virginia worked the ball to Appelt, who fed Aumiller in the arc. Aumiller’s goal at the 50:10 mark extended her school-record consecutive games scored streak to 33 and was her 189th career goal, tying the Virginia career mark.
Gallagher scored two more goals in just over two minutes to push the margin back up to seven at 12-5 with 3:26 to play. Duke won the draw but Aumiller caused a turnover in the Blue Devils’ offensive zone and Virginia brought the ball back upfield, setting the stage for Aumiller’s record. She took the ball from behind the cage and drove around from behind, setting up in the arc for the double and then going through it, setting yet another Virginia career record.
Lieb won the ensuing draw for the Cavaliers and as Virginia worked to set up for the final shot, a pass into Tyler Leachman in the arc was knocked loose, but Leachman was fouled by Duke’s Huether, setting Leachman at the 8 with an empty net with three seconds to play. Leachman scored, but the final score was 12-7 in favor of the Blue Devils.
The Cavaliers return to action against in-state rival Virginia Tech. Game time against the Hokies is 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 9.
