CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker, 4-3, at No. 41 North Carolina Sunday. The No. 30 ranked Cavaliers had opportunities to win the match in both singles and doubles play, but fell short as they lost for just the fifth time this season. The Cavaliers are now 20-5 on the year, 4-3 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels took the important double point to start the match. Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) won at No. 3 doubles for Virginia. However, the Tar Heels captured the point with their wins at No. 1 and a 9-8 tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles.
Virginia would try to rally in singles. Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) won at No. 3 singles in the only match decided in straight sets. Chris Gonyer (Louisville, Ky.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) won in three sets at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively. That was all the Cavaliers could win, as the Tar Heels held on to win at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 singles in three sets to clinch the match.
The Cavaliers return home Wednesday as they host a doubleheader at the Snyder Tennis Center. Virginia will play Virginia Tech at 2:30 p.m. and Radford at 6:30 p.m.
