SPRINGFIELD, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team won the second novice eight and the novice four competitions, and finished second in the novice eight and the varsity four on April 6 at the Occoquan Sprints.

UVa won the second novice eight with a time of 8:18.6 followed by Penn State (8:30.1), Mary Washington (8:45.7), Bucknell (8:59.6), St. Mary’s (9:10.5) and John Carroll (9:14.0). The Cavaliers’ second novice eight crew was comprised of coxswain Christina Saunders, Heather Swindell, Jodi Neuhauser, Amanda Tuck, Maggie McInerney, Carla Swartley, Emily Todd, Kelly Sparks and Katie McDade.

Virginia’s novice four won with a time of 8:14.5 followed by Johns Hopkins (8:35.3), Pittsburgh (9:23), George Mason (9:29.5), North Carolina (9:31) and Richmond (10:03). UVa’s novice four crew was made up of coxswain Kristina Caudle, Christina Berry, Katie Verhey, Lauren Cruickshank and Kim Maxfield.

The Cavaliers’ novice four crew also competed in a varsity four race as Virginia’s “B” crew and won that race with a time of 7:53.0. Pittsburgh finished second with a time of 8:04.9 followed by George Mason (8:15.5), Loyola (8:21.6) and North Carolina (9:36.2).

Villanova won the novice eight final with a time of 7:13.2 followed by Virginia (7:17.8), William & Mary (7:23.7), George Mason (7:32.4) and Washington (7:41.4). The Cavaliers’ novice eight crew was comprised of coxswain (Ashley Zapf), Anna Capetanakis, Christina Offutt, Monica Martinez, Lauren Frick, Emily Domenech, Mary Copland, Holly Gurgle and Bridget Barry.

LaSalle finished first in the varsity four with a time of 7:42.9 followed by Virginia (7:43.8), Johns Hopkins (7:49.0), Virginia Tech (8:26.6), Penn State (8:33) and Charleston (9:24.6). UVa’s varsity four crew was made up of coxswain Karen Richardson, Callie Spencer, Jenn Furstenau, Abby Lynch and Dawn Placek.

Virginia’s novice four “B” crew also won a race with a time of 8:29 followed by Virginia Tech (9:19.2), Penn State (9:36.1), Mary Washington (10:56.1), Stockton (11:06.7) and Richmond “B” (11:25.3). The Cavaliers’ novice four “B” crew was comprised of coxswain Janice Verbosky , Lexie Zaborowski, Alissa Rubin, Carrie Hatter and Catherine Thrasher.

UVa’s novice four “B” crew also competed in a varsity four race as Virginia’s “C” boat and won that race with a time of 7:50.6. Bucknell finished second with a time of 8:06.7 followed by LaSalle “B” (8:07.0), Catholic “B” (8:34.4), Pittsburgh “B” (8:37.6) and Maryland (9:42.6).

The Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action on April 12 when the Cavaliers compete against Michigan and Ohio State in the ACC/Big Ten Dual Regatta in Columbus, Ohio.
