On March 28th, the Virginia Football Cavaliers began their spring practice schedule. Head Coach Al Groh believes that substantial improvements can be made over the next few months and that getting stronger and more powerful aides in becoming a better football player.

“You become a better football player by playing better football,” Groh said. “You technically become better, your footwork becomes better, your hand placement becomes better, and your anticipation of situations becomes better.”

Groh and his staff welcome 41 returning letterman and 19 starters this season. A number of the returning players, including Jermaine Hardy and Art Thomas, have been working on new positions. Groh believes these changes will be beneficial because it builds more depth for the team.

“Changes were made with the expectation that it would work out well. The big issue is whether it’s the best place to leave the player for the team,” said Groh.

Hardy, who played cornerback last year, has been practicing recently as a safety. Groh cites a number of reasons for trying Hardy at this position.

“Safeties have to get the defense called and lined properly. They have to defend the deep ball and be a sure tackler,” Groh said. “(Jermaine) has got the ability to do all of that. He’s got good speed and range and good football savvy.”

Rich Bedesem’s performances on the field recently will also cause some changes in the future. Prior to this season, the linebacker saw limited action, but Groh believes he’ll be in the lineup this season. Safety Willie Davis is another player that will likely gain more playing time.

“He’s a player of substantial ability, ” said Groh. “He’s fast, tough, and instinctive. He’s gained awareness that it takes more than talent to be a college safety.”

Over the next few months, Groh will continue to make changes that he feels will ultimately help the program. Groh credits his past experiences at Wake Forest and in the NFL for helping him to shape the Virginia football program.

“My past experiences have been a significant influence here,” said Groh. “They give me confidence and reinforce that this will work. Being in the pros for 14 years gives me credibility! Do what they know (the pros) and do what works for them.”
