The Virginia defense, led by Tiffany Schummer’s three caused turnovers and three ground balls, held Virginia Tech (2-10) scoreless for the final 43:32 while at the other end UVa (10-3) scored 11 goals in that time to defeat the Hokies 19-3. The Cavalier defense held the Hokies to five shots, with only one coming in the final 43 minutes, and caused a season-high 22 turnovers. Schummer’s second caused turnover, in which she checked the ball loose from a Virginia Tech attacker at the restraining line on a clear, was the 100th of her career as she becomes only the third Wahoo to notch 100 career caused turnovers. Schummer also had five draw controls. Lauren Aumiller had seven draw controls, adding to her school-record total, and she notched four goals, bringing her career totals to 194 goals and 275 points. She already ranks 19th in Division I history in scoring and 3rd all-time in the ACC.

The Cavaliers got on the board early as Aumiller won the opening draw and the Virginia attack got the ball behind the cage where Morgan Thalenberg fed Caitlin Banks just outside the arc after the Tech keeper attempted an interception, and Banks raced in to the cage for a goal just 22 seconds into the game. Schummer won the ensuing draw and Cary Chasney drove in from the right side, scoring 43 seconds after Banks for an early 2-0 lead. An Aumiller caused turnover in the Cavaliers’ defensive zone started a transition upfield where Amy Appelt challenged from the side to put Virginia up 3-0 three minutes into the game. Tech answered as they forced a turnover at midfield and raced to the cage where Katie Madden fed Lindsey Welch, who scored 54 seconds after Appelt to cut the margin to 3-1.

Aumiller won the next draw and Virginia got the ball to Chasney, who fed Appelt as she challenged from the side. Appelt’s goal 29 seconds after the Hokies’ goal moved the margin back up to three. Aumiller started the next sequence as she caused a turnover in the midfield and in the Cavalier offensive zone, Chasney raced in from the right top and scored, putting UVa up 5-1. Aumiller then drew to herself and as she challenged from the top was fouled. She raced in from the free position and scored 53 seconds after Chasney’s goal.

Lauri Kenis picked up a dropped Tech pass at the goal circle and Virginia worked the ball upfield where Nikki Lieb dumped the ball into Banks, who scored her second goal of the game 11:12 into the game. Tech answered 21 seconds later with a draw control and a pass from Lauren Kenney to Madden.

Meredith Lazarus drew a charge just outside the Cavalier defensive arc and started a transition that saw Chasney drive to the cage halfway through the first period to put Virginia up 8-2, finishing her hat trick on the evening. Tech again answered as Welch fired in a shot on a drive to the cage, cutting the margin to 8-3. One minute later Thalenberg caused a turnover at the Virginia defensive restraining line and scooped up the loose ball and brought it upfield where Chasney shot, grubbed the rebound, and stuck it in the cage for her fourth goal of the night.

Lieb blocked a Hokie pass at the Virginia offensive restraining line as Virginia Tech attempted a clear and Julie Hauser picked up the loose ball. The Cavaliers got the ball to Aumiller, who drove to the cage, scoring 32 seconds after Chasney and putting Virginia in double digits. Five minutes later Ashleigh Haas picked up a Tech overthrow in the Cavaliers’ offensive end and she fed Hauser who was cutting into the cage. Haas scored the next goal for Virginia five minutes later as she picked up a loose ball after Courtney Young caused a turnover after the Hokies gained possession in the Virginia offensive arc. Haas took a couple of steps and fired the ball into the net, giving Virginia a 12-3 lead with 1:20 to play in the half, a score the teams took into the break.

At the start of the second half the Hokies took the ball into their offensive zone where Courtney Muller caused a turnover and Kenis scooped up the ground ball and started the ball upfield. In the UVa attack, Banks drove to the cage and scored 3:17 into the half, giving the Hoos a ten-goal lead at 13-3.

Chasney won the ensuing draw and she brought the ball upfield where she fed Aumiller on a pass from behind the cage. Aumiller quicksticked the ball to the back of the net, giving Virginia a 14-3 lead. Aumiller then drew to herself and in the attack, Banks fed Chasney in the arc and Chasney scored her fifth goal of the night 58 seconds after feeding Aumiller.

Schummer’s third caused turnover of the night led to the next Cavalier goal as Chasney picked up the loose ball and the Hoos worked the ball up to Tyler Leachman, who scored Virginia’s 16th goal 7:28 into the second period. Five minutes later Young dumped the ball in to Kim Connors, and Connors added a goal for the Cavaliers. Virginia tacked on another goal five minutes later as Appelt fed Aumiller as she cut around the crease. The Cavaliers’ final goal came as Lindsay Buchanan caused a turnover in the Virginia defensive arc and was fouled. On the reset the Cavaliers started a fast break and Haas scored on a drive to the goal, giving Virginia a 19-3 lead with 2:21 to play.

Andrea Pfeiffer started in the cage for Virginia and made one save in 52 minutes of play. Ginger Miles came in relief and allowed no goals in the final eight minutes of the game.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, April 15 with a game at George Mason. Game time against the Patriots is 7:00 pm.
