CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team snapped a four match losing streak with a 4-3 win over Maryland Wednesday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 12-8 on the season, 2-4 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers opened the match by taking the doubles point, which proved to be crucial. The Cavalier team of Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) posted a 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Then, with the doubles point in the balance, the Cavaliers’ Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J.) rallied from two breaks down to win 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, Virginia would get wins early by Tuchband and Stern before Maryland closed to make the score 3-2. With two matches left on the court and the Cavaliers needing one win for victory, Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) clinched the win at No. 6 singles with a straight set win.

“This was a typical close 4-3 ACC match,” stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “Getting the doubles point was really important. Then Jen, Lori, and Lauren played some great tennis in singles and got us the win. We need to build on this because we have two more important ACC matches this weekend.”

The Cavaliers close out the regular season this weekend as they host Wake Forest on Saturday at 11:00 am and NC State Sunday at noon. Both matches will be played at the Snyder Tennis Center.
