CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 32 Virginia women’s tennis team won its second straight ACC match Saturday, defeating Wake Forest 5-2 at the Snyder Tennis Center. With the win, the Cavaliers are now 13-8 overall, 3-4 in the ACC.
The visiting Demon Deacons would take an early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Cavalier team of Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J.) posted the only UVa win, at No. 1 doubles.
However, the Cavaliers would rally to win the match with strong singles play, taking five of the six matches. Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to bring the match score to 2-2 after Wake Forest had won at No. 1 singles. Tuchband would post a straight set win at No. 2 singles before Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) would clinch the match with her three set win at No. 3 singles. Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) closed out the match with a three set win at No. 6 singles.
“This team proved today that they will fight all day long,” stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “We got behind early by losing the doubles point, but we showed a lot of character to respond like we did in singles.”
Virginia closes out the regular season on Sunday as they host NC State at noon at the Snyder Tennis Center.
