CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision to the #12 ranked Miami Hurricanes in front of a UVa Baseball Stadium record crowd of 1,955 spectators in the second contest of a three-game series. Miami took a 4-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning before the Hurricanes scored six unearned runs, courtesy of three Cavalier errors, to pull ahead in what was a very close game most of the way. The loss was just UVa’s second at home this season, both coming to the Hurricanes.

Virginia took its first lead of the series (1-0) and scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Joe Koshansky reached base on a Miami fielding error before coming around the bases to score a run on a two-out single to center field by Eric Christensen.

Miami tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Ryan Braun walked to reach base before scoring a run two batters later on a RBI-double to left field by Erick San Pedro.

The Hurricanes took their first lead of the contest in the top of the fifth inning when Gaby Sanchez singled to left-center field before he scored a run two batters later on a RBI ground out to shortstop by Danny Figuero.

But the Cavaliers came right back and tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mark Reynolds connected on a solo home run to left-center field. Reynolds’ home run was his sixth of the season.

Miami regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning for good and made it a 3-2 contest when the Hurricanes’ Sanchez connected on his second single of the game and eventually scored a run from third base on a wild pitch.

Miami extended its lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth inning when San Pedro reached first base after being hit by a pitch before he came around to score a run two batters later on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field by Richard Giannotti.

The Hurricanes broke the game wide open and scored six unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 10-2 lead after Virginia committed three errors to go along with three Miami hits.

Virginia added two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 10-4 contest after consecutive RBI-singles by Andrew Riesenfeld and Kyle Werman, but that would be as close as the Cavaliers would get.

UVa starting pitcher Andrew Dobies pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in a no decision. The Cavaliers’ Gabe Spooner (0-1) took the loss after going 1.1 innings and allowed two runs to go along with two strikeouts.

Miami starting pitcher Brandon Camardese (5-0) went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts to pick up the victory.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 20-12 on the season. The victory improves Miami’s record to 27-6 on the year. The Hurricanes secure the series with the win after taking a two games to none lead with the victory.

Virginia and Miami will return to action on Sunday, April 13th when the Cavaliers and Hurricanes play the final contest of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
