CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 32 Virginia women’s tennis team closed out the 2003 regular season with a third consecutive ACC win, defeating NC State 5-2 Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. With the win the Cavaliers are 14-8 on the year, 4-4 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers opened the match strong by sweeping the doubles matches. Fourth-years Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J.) and Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) won at No. 1 doubles in their final home match. First years Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and Kristen James (Clifton, Va.), along with Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Kyle Montgomery (Charlotteville, Va.) completed the sweep with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Virginia would continue that strong play in singles, as they took four of the six matches. Williams and Tuchband won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, as did Stern at No. 4 singles. Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) also won for Virginia.

“We played some of the best doubles we have played all year today,” stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “We used that to get some momentum early and shake off some of the emotions that occur in your final home match. We wanted to close out the year with three ACC wins and we were able to do so.”

Virginia travels to Raleigh, N.C. next weekend for the ACC Tournament.
