The No. 34 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team suffered their third consecutive 4-3 loss, falling to Virginia Tech Tuesday at the Snyder Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cavaliers are now 20-7 on the year.

Virginia opened the match strong by winning the doubles point. The teams of Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) and Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.), Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.), and Chris Gonyer (Louisville,Ky.) and Stephen Nolen (Aurora, Colo.) swept all three doubles contests

However in singles play, the Cavaliers could only win two of the six matches. Duquette, playing his final home match won in straight sets at No. 2 singles over Stephan Rod, and Meythaler defeated Adel Abbas in straight sets at No. 6 singles.

“Losing a third match like this in a row hurts,” stated Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “I think it is a good thing for it to hurt because this kind of pain is what pushes teams to get better. Hopefully we can learn from this come out with a win in the next close match we play.”

Virginia will travel to Raleigh, N.C. for play at the ACC Tournament this weekend. The No. 5 seeded Cavaliers play No. 4 seed Wake Forest at 9:00 a.m. in Friday’s quarterfinals.
