CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team road the arms of starting pitcher Josh Myers and relief pitcher Greg Hansard to an 8-3 non-conference win over the visiting Old Dominion Monarchs in front of 637 spectators at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. The Cavaliers pounded out 12 hits highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance at the plate by Eric Christensen and a trio of Virginia players added a pair of hits to lead UVa to a five-run victory.

Old Dominion scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning and took a 1-0 lead when Allen Strick doubled off the left field wall before scoring a run one batter later on a RBI-single to left field by John Oehler.

However, Virginia answered right back in the bottom of the third inning and scored four runs to take the lead for good. UVa’s Mark Reynolds drove in the first two runs of the inning with a two-run RBI-triple down the left field line to score Kyle Werman (double) and Matt Dunn (walk) before Joe Koshansky connected on his third home run of the season with a two-run shot to left-center field to drive in Reynolds to give the Cavaliers a 4-0 lead.

Virginia added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and took a 7-1 lead. Dunn drove in the first two runs when he pushed a two-run RBI single through the infield on a bunt to score Werman (single) and Matt Street (double) before Dunn scored a run himself one batter later on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Reynolds to make the score 7-1.

The Cavaliers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning to stretch their lead to 8-1 when Eric Christensen singled before coming around to score a run on a wild pitch.

The Monarchs scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it an 8-3 contest when Derek James walked and later scored a run on a wild pitch before Evan Chipman drove in Demarque Hairston with an RBI-single up the middle to cut the lead to five. But that would be as close as ODU would get as Virginia held on for the win.

UVa’s Myers made his first career start and his second collegiate appearance on the mound and pitched a solid game. Myers lasted 4.2 innings and allowed just one run on five hits and struck out one batter in his starting debut. UVa’s Greg Hansard (1-1) picked up the win after pitching 4.1 innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits with a team-high three strikeouts.

ODU starting pitcher Dana Arrowood (0-2) went 4.0 innings and allowed eight runs on ten hits to go along with three strikeouts in the loss.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 22-12 overall, while the loss drops Old Dominion’s record to 12-21 on the season. UVa’s win gives the Cavaliers an 18-2 mark at home.

Virginia will return to action on Wednesday, April 16th when the Cavaliers travel to Blacksburg, Va. to face the Virginia Tech Hokies in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM at VT’s English Field.
