The No. 34 nationally ranked Cavaliers are now 20-7 on the year and head into the Atlantic Coast Conference 2003 Men’s Tennis Championships at No. 5 in the ACC. The last time the team was ranked this high was in 1997 when they were No. 21 in the nation. Head Coach Brian Boland credits this year’s success to having a talented and hard working group of players.
“We were fortunate to sign the best freshman class in the country in my first year recruiting at Virginia,” Boland says. “The team is extremely unified, they work hard and each individual has really developed in the past 6 months. I could not be more pleased with their effort.”
Currently there are seven first-years on the team, four of whom are playing in the top six slots, including the top seed held by Doug Stewart. Despite having a young team, Boland believes that the team can continue to play hard and have a strong finish this season.
“They are young and still improving everyday. I would like to see them focus on performing well each and every match and I think the results will take care of themselves. There are no limits as to what the team could accomplish,” said Boland.
Virginia is set to play No. 4 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday, April 18th at 9 am at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
